Tremor in Greece felt in Malta

A strong earthquake that rattled southern Greece was felt in various parts of Malta yesterday morning.

The director of the Civil Protection Department, Peter Cordina, said one person from Valletta and another from Sliema called the department to inquire about the tremor they had felt.

Several people from Gozo also called the Seismic Monitoring Unit of the Physics Department within the University of Malta.

The earthquake, measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale, struck just off the Southwest coast of Greece. It was located some 656 kilometres away from Malta at 37.0 North, 21.7 East, the unit said. The quake was reported at about 11.10 a.m. local time and a second, smaller shock was also recorded at 11.38 a.m.

Readers from Valletta, Sliema and San Ġwann who called the offices of Allied Newspapers said they felt their desks and computer monitors shaking. One person who works in Sliema said the whole building was vibrating.

The BBC news website reported that witnesses in Athens said the earthquake lasted at least 15 seconds and there were no reports of casualties or damage.

"We were shaken for quite a long time, swaying back and forth," an Athens resident told Reuters news agency.

The tremor was felt as far away as Cairo, in Egypt, BBC reported adding that earthquakes are common in Greece and that the last serious earthquake there killed more than 100 people in September 1999.

Only last month, Malta felt a tremor following another earthquake that rocked the Greek capital, Athens. That earthquake measured 6.5 on the Richter scale.

The Seismic Monitoring Unit is urging anyone who felt the tremor to fill in the questionnaire posted on its website. This will help the unity to accurately estimate its intensity.

Computer for €0.99 per day

Government’s vision for 2010 is that Malta will become The Smart Island, one of the top 10 information societies in the world. Government has set several targets to realise this vision, and one of these is overcoming the barriers of access and affordability to technology.

Over the last couple of years, the Ministry for Investment, Industry and IT (MIIIT) has implemented diverse initiatives to wipe out the digital divide and partnered with major multi-national vendors and local resellers to make software and hardware products and services available at more affordable prices to students and others.

As part of ‘The Smart Island’, the National ICT Strategy for 2008-2010, MIIIT is launching The Computer for €0.99 per day scheme in partnership with the banks and the private sector to make brand-new PCs available to the public at the affordable rate of €0.99 per day.

Government will refund each household that purchases computing equipment from any recognised hardware reseller between the 18th of February and 30th May, 2008, a subsidy of 16%. The subsidy will be given up to a purchase cost of €1,165 (VAT inclusive). The 16% subsidy will be provided for computing equipment that includes and is bundled as follows: a laptop by itself; laptop with mouse and/or printer; PC desktop and monitor; or PC desktop and monitor with mouse, keyboard and/or printer.

Bank of Valletta, HSBC Bank Malta plc, and Lombard Bank Malta plc will each offer a distinct loan for this scheme to support households that need financial help to purchase the computing equipment. The daily repayment rate of the loans on offer is of €0.99.

The original copy of the fiscal receipt and the original invoice relating to the purchase of the computing equipment must be provided with the application form for the 16% subsidy.

€20,000 stolen in Qormi hold-up
Some €20,000 in cash were reportedly stolen in a hold-up in Qormi late this morning.

The incident happened when a man, 55, was held up as he emerged from his small food processing factory in Tal-Handaq Road at around 11.30 a.m.

The thief, an armed and hooded man, escaped in a car which had been waiting for him.

The theft was reported by the victim who called at Qormi police station. He was found to have a slight head injury, which he said was caused when he fell as the thief grabbed his bag.

Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona is holding an inquiry.

Cars ablaze in Buskett


UPDATED 1355CET - Nobody was injured in an incident which saw three cars in flames in Buskett early on Sunday morning. The cars in question apparently belong to birdwatchers.

It was at around 0620CET that the police were informed that there were a number of vehicles ablaze in Buskett.


Upon arrival the police found a Ford Fusion, a Honda Odessey and Pajero Jnr engulfed in flames.

Two of the cars belong to BirdLife Malta council members while the third car, exhibiting a diplomatic plate, belongs to an American citizen who started volunteering with the organisation a few months ago. The three volunteers were carrying out scientific ringing studies in Buskett. They arrived on site at around 0545CET and headed off to a nearby field to start their work. Just a few minutes after, they heard a bang. Within fifteen minutes fire engines and Police had arrived on the scene. BirdLife Malta’s Executive Director Tolga Temuge also arrived at the scene shortly after.

The Police informed BirdLife that the incident was most probably a criminal act. Mr Temuge said: “This is not the first time such a thing has happened. Our reserves as well as the EU Life project site were vandalised, 3,000 trees and shrubs were uprooted and sawed down at FORESTA 2000 and to this day not one single person has been brought to justice. This inaction is giving a dangerous message that these criminals can get away with what they are doing.”

BirdLife said that ten days ago the organisation had sent a letter to the Commissioner of Police and in copy to the Office of the Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment George Pullicino informing them about messages with an increasingly threatening tone posted on the FKNK website forum. BirdLife had requested action from the part of the relevant authorities but, up till today, the organisation had received no communication from the Police.

“We demand urgent action from the government to bring these criminals to justice. What are they waiting for, someone to get seriously hurt?” Temuge concluded.

Nobody was harmed in the incident and no damage was done to the area.

Magistrate Scerri Herrera ordered an inquiry. Police investigations are underway.

RSPB condemns arson attack

The UK BirdLife International partner of BirdLife Malta has condemned the arson attack on three cars belonging to the NGO’s volunteers which took place on Sunday in Buskett.
In its statement, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) described the attack as a “reckless and needless act by petty-minded individuals”.

“Unfortunately, this cowardly act of vandalism towards BirdLife Malta is not the first, as previous acts have seen the mindless uprooting of trees at a BirdLife Malta nature reserve,” the RSPB’s international director Alistair Gammell said.

“Malta has been welcomed to the European Union and, even though some individuals may not like the Union’s bird protection laws, migrating birds belong to everyone in Europe and we know that BirdLife Malta will not bow to bullying tactics,” he went on to say, as he reiterated the full support for the work of BirdLife Malta.

“We hope that those guilty of criminal acts against our partner will be made to face justice,” Mr Gammell concluded.

Last year, the RSPB sent a 114,000 strong petition to the Maltese Government from RSPB members condemning the illegal hunting of birds, which it said continues to bring shame on Malta.

A new eight kilometre tunnel linking the power station at Delimara to the distribution centre in Marsa has been inaugurated.
The biggest tunnel in the Maltese islands, constructed with an investment of around €9.3million, forms part of the underground network which hosts the main electricity cables.

It hosts 132kV cables supplying the distribution centre with electricity and 33kV cables carrying the centre’s output.

Over 40 per cent of the expenses covered the strengthening of the tunnel between the Tas-Silg area and Zejtun, as the rock formation of the area required artificial strengthening in order to avoid any hazard.

The underground network system allows for regular maintenance without causing any inconvenience on the streets as well as for a quicker identification of faults and their repairs.

It also includes a 5km tunnel between Santa Venera and Mosta, a 1.5km tunnel between Delimara and Marsascala, and two 1km tunnels between Msida and San Gwann and between Tarxien and Kirkop.

Another 1km tunnel is currently being constructed between Santa Venera and Msida, while a further 6km of tunnels are planned for various localities around the islands.

The Corporation is also planning to invest €56 million for the construction of six more distribution centres in the coming four years and a further €8 million in cables linking them to the system.

These will be carried out while the local electricity grid is also connected to Sicily in a project that is estimated to cost around €280 million.

Oscar-winning film director, screenwriter and actor, Roberto Benigni will be honoured by the University of Malta with the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature on April 22nd.
A press release issued by the University of Malta explained how the conferment of this degree recognizes not only Benigni’s distinctive exploration of the emotional range possible in cinema, but also the significant contribution to Dante scholarship, to the study of literature and, by extension, to the humanities in general.

The degree of Doctor of Literature will be awarded to Benigni in a ceremony which will be held on April 22 at the Jesuits’ Church in Valletta. The oration will be delivered by Dr. Gloria Lauri-Lucente, Senior Lecturer in Italian and Comparative Literature and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and will be followed by the acceptance speech of the Honorary Graduand. The Dean of the Faculty of Arts will be sponsoring.

Much to the delight of the numerous Benigni admirers among the faculty members and the university students, many of whom have recently followed on Italian television the enormously successful series of performances TuttoDante, Benigni will also be treating the University of Malta to a “serata dantesca” on April 23 on the University Campus at the Sir Temi Zammit Hall.

The evening will start with a discussion on Dante between Benigni and the eminent Dante scholar Robert Hollander, Professor of European Literature Emeritus at Princeton University and the founding director of the Princeton Dante Project. Following the discussion, Benigni will give a much-anticipated recitation of one of his favourite “canti” from the Divina Commedia.

A maxi-screen will also be set up on campus to relay the performance in order to extend the benefit of the “serata” to non-university members.

While in Malta, Benigni will also be inaugurating an exhibition of illustrations of the Divina Commedia by the artist Monika Beisner at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Valletta. The illustrations form part of a translation into English of the Divina Commedia by Robert and Jean Hollander with a Preface by Roberto Benigni published by Edizioni Valdonega in 2007.

Hundreds of mourners packed Msida’s parish church Saturday afternoon, to pay their last respects to Maltese comedy icon Gemma Portelli, who passed away on Thursday. She was 75.

Politicians from both sides of the house, media personalities and actors attended the service.

These included her old friends Charles Clews, Hubert Puglisevich, Mario Micallef, Mary Rose Bonello, Hector Bruno and Alfred Mallia.

Well-wishers stood on the parish square to say farewell after the hour-long service led by Dun Gorg Dalli.

He described her as “a woman with hidden assets, who has put her great talents at the service of others”.

“Gemma was a great crowd puller. She was as much loved for her wit and charm as she was for her acting talents”, he added.

After Mass, a large crowd gathered outside the church as the coffin was placed in the hearse and taken for burial at the Santa Marija Addolorata Cemetery.

Ms. Portelli was awarded the MQR in 1999.
